The overall performance of a waterproofing application can be influenced by how well a waterproofing membrane adheres to the substrate. Adhesion testing is a destructive test that is frequently used on exposed locations like rooftops and podiums.
Some of the builders with whom United Trade Sydney works prefer to conduct adhesion testing on a sample of internal wet areas (bathrooms, laundries) and balconies on lower levels of multi-story construction projects to ensure that the waterproofing membrane is adhering to the concrete before moving on to the upper levels.
Adhesion testing is a damaging test that determines the bond strength of a membrane to its substrate by employing aluminum dollies attached to a hydraulic pump. Where a sufficient bond is not there, membranes designed to be totally attached to their substrate will perform poorly. When force is applied to an exposed membrane that has de-laminated from its substrate, it is easier to cut or tear it.
