This is a non-destructive test that can be used to examine flat roofs for saturated insulation and entrapped moisture as part of preventative maintenance. This enables industrial building owners to make an informed decision about whether or not to address any flaws discovered in order to extend the life of their roof.
Thermography is a technique for detecting temperature differences that can indicate the presence of moisture in the evaporation process. Evaporation is an endothermic process in which heat is absorbed from the environment as liquid moisture is converted to gas. These cold points can be identified using a thermographic imager as prospective moisture locations, which can subsequently be validated with a moisture meter instrument.
Similarly, a moist object or substance will receive and lose heat energy at a different rate than a dry object or material. A thermal camera will detect inconsistent temperature of a substance as an indicator of moisture when the environment cycles between low and high temperatures.
